Ninety Grade 10 students of Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus conducted an educational tour at the College of Engineering, UP Diliman on 28 April 2023 to learn more about the College and its programs.
A short orientation meeting was held at the UP National Engineering Center wherein information about the College of Engineering, its departments and institutes, and research activities and facilities were discussed. Asst. Prof. Matthew Travis Alcantara, member of UP ICE Geotechnical Engineering Group and Tours committee, introduced UP ICE to the students, highlighting our six academic groups and laboratories.
The meeting was followed by a laboratory tour at the UP ICE Construction Materials and Structures Laboratory (CoMSLab) facilitated by Asst. Prof. Jonas Christian Quero, member of UP ICE Construction Engineering and Management Group and Tours committee. CoMSLab staff members demonstrated the use of Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and Compression Machine. Students also toured the Structures Laboratory which houses a strong floor and reaction wall that can be used for pseudo-dynamic testing of full-scale components of structures. The laboratory also plans to install a 3m x 3m bi-axial shaking table that can simulate real time-history records of past earthquakes and test scale-model structures.
