UP ICE joins the Circular Explorer Launch in Manila Bay

UP ICE joined the launch of the Circular Explorer in Manila Bay on July 7, 2022.

The Circular Explorer is a first of its kind 100% solar powered prototype catamaran designed to recover up to 4 tons/day of plastic waste to preserve vital marine ecosystems in a sustainable way. The launch event was organized by Holcim and One Earth One Ocean, and was attended by representatives from national government agencies, local government units and other stakeholders. UP ICE is represented by its director, Dr. Maria Antonia Tanchuling, Asst. Prof. Ma. Brida Lea Diola and Asst. Prof. Lestelle Torio-Kaimo.

In addition, the operators are partnering with the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute to advance ocean research – taking a science-driven approach for more impact. With built-in sensors and micro-plastic collectors on board, the catamaran will drive live data mapping along its journey to fuel the faculty’s research programs.
