Publication Alert: Valorization of waste mill tailings from small-scale mining through geopolymerization: strength, durability, and heavy metal leaching potential

A paper by Asst. Prof. Christian Orozco, faculty member of UP ICE Environmental and Energy Engineering Group, and BSCE graduates Kim Deirdre Lynn Castro and Ma. Mikaela De Boda entitled “Valorization of waste mill tailings from small-scale mining through geopolymerization: strength, durability, and heavy metal leaching potential” has been recently published in the Journal of Soils and Sediments.

The study aims to use mill tailings to produce a construction material by geopolymerization, an environment-friendly process that uses less energy and gives products comparable strength and long-term durability. Mill tailings are sediments produced after the metal-bearing mineral has been separated from an ore’s uneconomic fraction.
